A number of charity organisations and community groups in Swansea have welcomed donations from the local Amazon fulfilment centre.
Swansea Council, Swansea Women’s Aid and NHS Wales were among those who received donations from the Swansea team as part of an Amazon programme to support communities affected by COVID-19.
Swansea Council received a donation of colouring books and pencil packs, which were added to food parcels and distributed to the community by local foodbanks. NHS Wales welcomed a donation of pyjamas and hygiene products that were gifted to hospital patients in care in Swansea.
Swansea Women’s Aid, a charity that supports women, with or without children, who are affected by domestic abuse, received a £1,000 donation. The donation was initially made in support of International Women’s Day, but the charity now plans to use the donation to help those affected by COVID-19.
The donations are part of the “Amazon in the Community” programme, whereby the company supports the communities around its operating locations across the UK.
Chris Law, General Manager at Amazon in Swansea, said: “We appreciate the work being done to support the Swansea community by the organisations in our area, and wanted to recognise their efforts with these donations. Thank you to all the charity staff and volunteers for continuing to offer their crucial services during this time.”
Lynne Saunders, CEO of Swansea Women’s Aid, said: “On behalf of myself and the rest of the team from Swansea Women’s Aid, we want to say a big thank you to Chris and the Amazon team in Swansea. This donation will go a long way to help us support vulnerable women in our community during COVID-19.”
Community donations is one of a number of ways in which Amazon is supporting communities across the UK during COVID-19.
Amazon has joined a coalition of companies, universities, and research institutions to boost testing capacity for COVID-19. Amazon’s logistics network, along with Royal Mail, will deliver test kits to critical workers and diagnostic sites set up around the UK.
Amazon is also providing free online STEM resources to students in lower-income communities to enable learning to continue during school closures and is working with charity partner Magic Breakfast to ensure they can continue to provide free breakfast provisions to children in disadvantaged areas.
